The camp followers provide a vital role on the battlefield, bringing water and refreshments to the fighting troops. Behind the scenes the noncombatants keep an eye on the kids and the camp. These roles can be filled by people who wish to support their partners who may be fighting but who don't want to take on an active regimental role.
